Spent a mightily productive, if exhausting, day in the yard and garden. While the BF weed-wacked the front lawn, I weeded the front plant area and visited Portland Nursery with a Dear Friend to stock up on plants, soil, and seeds. Working together, the BF & I filled up two green-waste bins. While he edged and raked and swept the front, I headed to the backyard to weed (more needs doing), amend soil, top off raised beds, sow seeds (Cosmos & Sunflower), plant dill and basil and two tomatoes (Early Girl and Sweet Millions), and feed and water it all. Now feeling mightily exhausted, but also quite pleased with the progress. Roses're blooming, ditto iris, poppies, and various others. Buds have appeared on the delphinium, foxglove, and kalmia. Looking forward to outdoor time at Hive Magnum, now that the weather's cooperating more and more.

It feels oh-so-good to have done this, 'specially as I did it all by myself this year. Took the car into the shop first thing yesterday morning, sat sipping hot tea and munching on toast w/PB 'n' bacon at Common Grounds next to Hawthorne Auto, and, without having made any plans for doing so ahead of time, ended up catching the bus downtown where I procured a tray of organic starts from the Farmer's Market: Read more... )

Today's been quite productive, which makes for a happy pleased MLE. Harvesting tomatoes & pumpkins, planting Winter kale (Redbor & White Russian), planting cover crop (crimson clover) in barrels (formerly lettuce in front & formerly pumpkins in back), weeding, and finally bark mulching like mad. Clickies for Pickies.

I've recently enjoyed a couple of quite nice visits to Portland's Crystal Springs Rhododendron Gardens. Since common wisdom considers 1 peekture equal to 1,000 words, I give you many thousands of words so you can share my experiences vicariously:

Focus on Flowers

Focus on Water Fowl

Entrance fee = $3 (FREE on Tu & Wed). Come visit and we'll wander 'em together... :-)

Today's accomplishments included weeding the corn patch, weaving the soaker hoses all throughout the corn for ease of watering, planting beans/peas next to the corn (2 of 3 sisters now in place), planting the 3rd wave of lettuce/spinach/mustard, watering corn 'n' new beans/peas, new lettuce/spinach/mustard, and the greenhouse, photo-documenting the garden some (Clickie for Some Pickies of the CopperMoon Garden), doing misc other weeding, helping [livejournal.com profile] lightfoote create drainage and more paths 'tween beds, updating on-line garden log, and finally harvesting broccoli, mustard greens, cress, and garlic tops out of which I made numbly slaw for dinner along w/leftover turkey soup and garlic bread. It feels really good 'n' productive 'n' healthy 'n' nice working together to grow a garden and feasting from it. Sleep now beckons...

Done outside for now. Managed to finish weeding bed #3, completely weed beds #5, 6, and 7 (as well as the paths in-between), haul the weeds outta the garden, harvest llama beans for mixing into soil, start turning bed #5 (then stopped b'c I couldn't remember the plan for the bed), start spreading woodchips on the garden paths, scrub and refill doggeral water trough, play w/doggerals, tidy up girls' hay-catch box which'd apparently gotten knocked over during some shenanigans, and along the way began my tanning program (it's called working outside). Also did laundry for camping. Now to shower and go grocery shopping in preparation for dinner tonight. I haven't made Chicken Paprika in far too long, so tonight's the night.
