Really Good Stuff, This: Geek Social Fallacies About Sex.

On Memory & Paying Attention. "To experience the world in memorable ways, we need to treat perception as an active process of recognising, probing, questioning, comparing, opining and feeling."

Way back when, one Winter quarter (so 'twas grey & cold out quite a bit) at UC Santa Cruz in the early 1980s, a mess of folks in the dorms took AbPsych and/or Psych of Death & Dying. (I did NOT, but was surrounded by those who did.) Perhaps inevitably, lotsa people started becoming convinced - or at least talking/worrying lots 'bout the possibility - that they were suffering from various psych symptoms, conditions, abnormalities, &c., often including depression. Fascinating. I have just exactly enough brainwidth right now to deal w/all the ducks currently in the air and/or milling about waiting for orders to fly into formation, but the creative-come-up-with-clever-ideas-that-don't-involve-logistics part o' my brain is currently off-line. Logistics is ALL. And that's just fine 'n' dandy. Overwhelm is close, but not here. Still functioning...although perhaps not as efficiently as possible (case in point, I'm doing this entry rather than packing/stacking/listing things 'n' stuff or doing any other of the myriad trip-prep activities I could be doing). Hell - I'm taking a break now, that's whassup. Back at in just a bit...

Phew! *rolls up my sleeves, cranks the music, and has at once again* Whee! (I really do enjoy this stuff :-)

BAZOOM.

The Human Beast - Tom Wolfe: http://www.nysun.com/pf.php?id=32647
Damn this is dense. Brimming w/thought provoking stuff.

"Humiliation is a wound inflicted upon the beast's status picture of himself, upon the validity of his standing within the boundaries of his own fiction absolute." ... "I had begun to wonder if somewhere in the brain there might be a center that interpreted incoming data and gave the human beast the feeling he was improving its status, merely maintaining its status, or suffering the grave wound of humiliation."
