Thank goodness, it's all back to normal now, 11 weeks to the day from the dining room ceiling/roof leak. Well, the roof and rebuild have been completed anyway, and what's left doesn't require outside help. Everything else will get back into place in stages. The bar's back against the wall rather than in the middle of the dining room. The leaves are back in the table which is back where it belongs. Four (4) of the dining roomchairs still hold bottles of booze and stuff from the built-in. Planning to dust everything from the built-in and bar before putting 'em back. Will also cull what I don't much care for, and put aside those booze bottles w/1" or less left for a Drink It Down time. YayPhew!

Went out yesterday for a gorgeous Columbia Gorge outing with bonus fab sunset: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8146112@N06/albums/72177720297133669

The day began with the bonus fun of finding spots to park two (2) trucks nearby for off-loading drywall, tools, &c. Since it's Wednesday morning, trash & recycling & green-waste bins take up valuable parking real estate. Hopefully I'll remember where I parked my car by the time I need to drive it next. Meanwhile, it's LOUD in here, what with hammering, drilling, chop-sawing, &c.
I can see progress already though. The dining room ceiling and wall holes have shrunk and (hopefully) by tomorrow (or Friday) will be all gone and things'll be back to normal after nearly three (3) months. Whee!

Just heard that the rebuild begins 8am Wednesday and should be all done this week. Meanwhile, the check to cover all but the deductible arrived today. The 'rents have kindly offered to cover the deductible so that check'll arrive before long as well. YayPhew!

Tomorrow's To Do List now includes: (1) deposit the insurance company check, (2) empty and move the table by the dining room window, and (3) remove the leaves from the dining room table and shift it towards the living room. Thankfully the stuff in the built-in can stay where 'tis. It's not where it belongs, but after two (2) weeks on the dining room table and the realization that this process would take far longer than ideal, I removed it from the table and stuck it out of the way in the built-in.

Eventually, everything will return to normal. This'll also provide me a fine opportunity to see what booze belongs into the bar. Will polish off those bottles with just a little bit left. Will pass along the crap booze from some friends who made jello shots for a wedding and left me with the leftover cake and whipped cream vodkas. (Yuck!) No need to have that take up space any longer!

The end's in sight now...

I've let things at home slide quite a bit since the 'rents left after the holidays and then water-remediation required lot of shifting of stuff and things in the dining / living room. Trying not to feel too bad about it all, and poking at bits here and there. I have a fairly high clutter tolerance, but find the gaping holes in the ceiling and wall disturbing, and the torn-off plaster areas distracting. Realizing I'm feeling anxious about the upcoming (but not for weeks...gah) roof-repair and dining room rebuild projects.

Back when I had folks over for gaming weekly, the house stayed in far better shape. Now it's gonna take some doing to return it to Parent/Visitor-Worthy status. It cannot happen fully until after the work's all done, so not for another month-ish. Okay. Guess I'll have to accept how it is now for a while longer and try not to fret too much. Breathing better now.

I have some garden-work to do in the next few weeks, which'll make me feel better. Need to get pots and soil and seeds, prune the backyard roses and Groot, repot some plants from cuttings now rooted - spreading love in the process, &c.

The insurance company appears to be on track to cover what's gone wrong and what'll it take to fix it. Not all done yet (by a ways), but I'm feeling a better 'bout it all now.

Finally got another estimate from someone who actually got onto the roof to see what's what and what's needed. Hoping it'll work out for a sunny (or at least dry) day before long to get it fixed. At least I feel better 'bout the emergency fix as he reported that it looked well done with good quality materials.

The wind tunnel left yesterday after moisture levels fell to baseline "dry." What a freakin' load off not having that roar in the background, not to mention no longer needing to tiptoe my way cautiously around the house, avoiding snaked extension cords for the various water remediation devices (fans, dehumidifier, heater, &c.)

More importantly, despite yesterday's (and today's) driving rain, the emergency roof repair seems to be holding. At least there's nothing I can see leaking, and the wall's still open so it'd likely be more obvious than before.

Still need roofing estimates, and hopefully soon, roof repair (non-emergency). Then I'll schedule the rebuild to put back the wood & plaster &c. that got torn and ripped off to allow access to dampness in order to dry it all. One roofing guy should be here this afternoon, and another on Friday. May try to line up another company as well, just in case. For now though, the stress level has fallen a bit, which I appreciate.

Wishing y'all a happier, healthier 2022! After getting out and about yesterday for the first time in ages, I felt (pleasantly) exhausted. Crawled into bed before 8:30pm last night after barely staying awake for whatever show/movie was playing on TV and realizing it was too much effort. Read more... )
