Goals &c.

Well, I'm back on the WW train, again, after several detours into eating craptastically. Made it to AquaFit yesterday, and've been reaching that goal (1x/week, minimum) steadily anyway. Today I start work on my next goal/reward: hiking all of the 30+ miles of the Wildwood Trail in Forest Park, in segments. Yeah, I achieve my reward - ability to do more hiking - by working towards my goal of hiking more. Chicken & Egg, in a good way!

Today's trail: 3.84 miles from Pittock Mansion to the End/Start of the Wildwood Trail (MP 0) near the Veteran's Memorial in Washington Park. E2 & I'll park one car down there, near the zoo, then carpool up to Pittock Mansion. Eventually perhaps I'll be able and willing to hike UP to the Pittock Mansion, but I'm a long ways away from that.

What's nice about this trail selection for 2020's Wildwood Trail Hike #1: 'twas the final segment of 2019's Wildwood Trail goal, and 'twas the first hike of 2011's All Trail Challenge when E2 and I travelled all 80+ miles of trails in Forest Park. We hiked all but Leif Erikson Trail's 11-and-a-bit miles, which we mountain-biked. (E2 did all of Forest Park again last year on her own, and joined me for chunks of Wildwood Trail. She's also a decade younger and far fitter. ;-)

Onward!

2020 Goals

I may update these by the end of the year, but for now:

- weigh my ODL weight (190) by Vday (02/14/20)
- weigh below 175 by my next bday (alternatively by the end of 2020)
- hike the entire Wildwood trail (in segments)
- go dancing monthly in 2020

WW Stuff

EDIT: Yesterday's official WW weigh-in (Monday AM): 201.4, so phew! Thinking I may meet my ODL stated weight (190) goal by the end of the year. If not, then by VDay 2020.

So, while out of town for my bday celebration, my 50 lb pin arrived from Weight Watchers. Heh, highly amusing, as my week away I blew off WW, big-time (-160 weekly pts). So, new goals: get back down under 200 by Monday, 04 November, the WW weigh-in day just shy of my year anniversary of joining the gym and WW (11/09/18). In other words, return to the weight I'd reached just before my bday, since when I've managed to regain nearly 5 lbs ;-)

Next # goal: reach ODL weight (190) by the end of the year (Monday, 30 Dec 2019), or, more realistically, by Monday, 10 Feb 2020 aka by Vday. What I do food-wise around Thanksgiving & Xmas will impact the date I reach this goal greatly.

Still hoping to get a couple more specific hikes in by the end of the year. First, I want to complete the final 3.84 miles of Wildwood Tral by the end of the year, but this'll require the powers that be actually completing the Burnside ped overpass by then, plus a non-totally crappy day for walking it. Secondly, I want to find a decent-weather Friday by the end of the year - or possibly a weekend - to hike the 5-mile Multnomah-Wahkeena loop.

Now that the rain's returned, though, I need to rejigger my weekly program. SIGH. I'd just really figured out the weekly sunny-weather program, too. (Wednesday AM AquaFit - when the best current instructor teaches, a maintenance 2-mile hike (Keil-Dogwood-Wild Cherry-Wildwood Trails loop in Forest Park or Lower Macleay to Stone Cottage & back again), along with a more serious hike (3-8 miles). Yeah, I knew this'd happen, but now the rain's here and I really need to figure it out. Working it out starts w/talking it out... )

It's not all about the #s, it's about what I can do now that I couldn't do when I began this process back on 09 Nov 2018 (when I tipped the scales at 250 and hurt so much I couldn't take a 1/4 mile walk to visit a waterfall). That being said, I'm SO pleased to have reached my initial # goal of being under 200 lbs by my bday (11 Sept). Weighed in at 199.2 this AM. It's not Weight Watchers (WW) "official," since Mondays are my WW weigh-in days, but I made it here and'll work to stay under until my bday...and then'll keep on going. Next # goal: to weight what it says on my ODL (190). Bonus: Yay for regaining chunks of wardrobe thought lost forever!

Along the way, I've realized how much having a plan helps me in setting and sticking to habits. These days I do AquaFit aka water aerobics on Wednesday AMs, since I like that instructor better than the M & F one. If traveling, the day may shift, but I'll still get in at least one water aerobics class each week. When the weather turns cooler and wetter, I'll increase my AquaFit attendance.

I also take a simple weekly keep-in-shape walk, usually one of my fave 2-mile Forest Park loops. (This also lets me hang out w/friends, even if they're not more hikey.) Looking into finding a 2-mile(ish) walk that's closer to home to increase flexibility in my routine (and for others with less flexie schedules). Mt Tabor Park seems likeliest for this.

Finally, on Fridays (usually), I continue my Do the Entire Wildwood Trail quest (sectionally, not all in one go). Only have three (3) more hikes to go to finish up all 30+ miles of it. Cannot finish before my bday simply because the 3.84 mile trail segment from Pittock Mansion to the Vet's Memorial in WA Park remains closed until they complete the Burnside Overpass. Fingers xd for doing this by the end of 2019, ideally before the 1 year anniversary of my Get Back In Shape So I Can Hike program (09 Nov). I plan to walk the Wildwood Trail again in 2020. Not sure what other goals to set along such lines. Hopefully the Friends of the Columbia Gorge will have another challenge like their Waterfall Wanderlust and Wildflower Whatever-It-Was ;-)

Other milestones to accomplish by the end of the year (or before 09 Nov): hike 2.4 mile Waclellah Falls trail (just re-opened), and hike the 5 mile Multnomah - Weisendanger - Dutch - Faerie - Wahkeena Falls loop. The reward for being able to do them again is actually doing them. WIN!

Despite not getting up until nearly Noon, it's been quite a productive day. Used the Domino Effect to my advantage. Wanted to cook while looking outside the kitchen window at the next-door neighbor's camellias blooming oh-so-nicely. First, then, I had to move everything off the window ledge. Secondly I had to dust the ledge. Thirdly, I had clean off all the items before replacing them (moving them around as needed), so I could finally Windex the window.

Mind you, I hate dusting with a passion, so find it astonishing and pleasing that I did this. Taking this as evidence that eating better and working out is helping with my energy levels. One Spring Cleaning goal (as in before Spring ends ;-): FULL HIVE MAGNUM DUSTING. Perhaps Baby Steps is the way to go rather than try to Dust All The Things, which I find incredibly daunting. Even if it's slow and steady such that when done at the end it's time to start again where I began (kitchen window), at least stuff's getting dusted and cleaned throughout the year/season.

Anyway, once I got my desired view, I made a vat of chili. Tasty - and good going WW-wise. One (1) cup of chili costs only one (1) WW point! So dinner consisted of chili w/grated cheddar, sour cream, and avocado. Heavenly!

While and after cooking, I finished 95% of a compilation (LightHouse), made more travel plans (monthly trips for next 3 months, with another likely in May that I've barely begun thinking about), browsed news websites along w/FB & InstaGram, read s'more of The Amber Spyglass in anticipation of the BBC production due out in April, and took care of this and that.

Now back to the annual Downtown Abbey cold weather rewatch. Fingers crossed for snow!

OMG it makes such a huge difference to add hefty pinches of nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, and allspice to my plain non-fat yogurt & chopped apple snack. Much tastier - and far more satisfying.

Going out this evening to hang out w/friends & acquaintances & strangers (to me) for writing & drawing. Well, some of them will draw, I'll stick to writing. What will I write? Whatever strikes my fancy. Glad to expand my social network some.

Ok, I've not completely fallen off the WW wagon, but it's definitely listing to one side this week (week 7). Read more... )
Anyway, my journey so far has me down 5% of my initial body weight, feeling generally more energetic with less ankle and hip pain, so I'm heading in the desired direction towards my ultimate goals. Hmm, writing this out has helped me gain perspective and stop beating myself up-phew! THIS is something I've missed about LJ, using writing to work through an issue. Glad to be back to it, at least a bit.

And the madness has subsided. Nearly a week ago, visitors began arriving. My two houseguests didn't fly in until Wednesday, but I helped amuse other out-of-town guests before then, and organized various meals and activities. Led a small contingent on a nice Columbia Gorge & Voodoo donut outing on Tuesday, then 10 of us went out for dinner that night. Wednesday dinner out for 13. Thursday breakfast out for 9. Hosted 15 for dinner (lasagna &c.) at Hive Magnum on Thursday night. Took a dozen out-of-town'ers to The Amazing Bubble Man & Jade Pearl Black show at Clinton Street Theater on Friday morning (marvelous show), then picked up food for Thanksgiving (belated): we were 18 for dinner at friend's house in NE on Friday night. Juggled schedules and made PDX-runs on Saturday. Had three folks spend the night Saturday night. (Returned for final Bubble Man & Jade Black Pearl show of the weekend Sunday afternoon, solo. FAB time!) Smaller dinner yesterday after a bit more sight-seeing. The final friend from out-of-town flew out this AM. PHEW!

Managed to make it to the gym for Aqua Fitness twice last week: Monday & Wednesday. (Gym cancelled classes on Friday & Saturday.) Went back again yesterday. Attended complementary Personal Trainer session (aka sales pitch) this AM. Have kept to all my weekly Weight Watcher point goals, even with the holiday. PHEW! Down 10 lbs now since I began.

Cravings have kicked in the past few days. I'm less busy, so my mind's not as full of schedules, plans, &c. Evenings seem to be the worst. It feels good not to give into temptation. Well, after the fact it feels good. At the time, it's annoying.

Last night I grabbed an apple and a few mini-carrots when what I wanted was to rip open the bag of leftover croissants from Petite Provence and stuff them info my mouth. Right now I've got the bowl of leftover Halloween candy on the dining room table in an effort to test - and hopefully - strengthen my resolve. Actually, chocolate's not such a big deal to avoid. But there're some cheeses in the my fridge that're singing to me like the Sirens. Must. Not. Give. In. LaLaLaLa...

Back to the pool in the AM.

Saw Bohemian Rhapsody today; liked it very much.

Okay, this'll likely get me posting here regularly, although the inability to post while traveling (when I have only cell phone and not my laptop) will interfere some w/this plan. In short, I've finally started taking action on getting into better shape and thereby regaining my stamina and energy. This two pronged-process involves paying attention to (and reducing) my daily food/drink intake and also to noting (and increasing) my weekly activity levels. I plan to post here about these processes, and hopefully will also post about other things in my life once I'm back in the DW fka LJ habit.

Leaving town Sunday AM for a Fall Colors train ride (hopefully 2 - 2 hour rides) out of Wheeler, OR. It runs along the Nehalem Bay some, then up the Nehalem River. Should be marvelous! https://oregoncoastscenic.org/schedule/

It's been a fine Fall, full of lovely colors and fallen leaves. We had a full weekplus of warm weather, which was delightful. Now the temps have fallen into the 30s at night with highs in the 50s. I do so love living in a city and state with real seasons, even though they're SeasonsLite compared to much of the rest of the country ;-) Here's a link to photos of my recent last-minute jaunt up the Columbia Gorge: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8146112@N06/albums/72157700087365132

[livejournal.com profile] delerium3 & I have decided that hiking the All Trails Challenge (ATC) again just isn't enough. We've also signed on with Waterfall Wanderlust (WW) through Friends of the Columbia Gorge.

Today marked the start of our WW, w/a lovely drive up the Columbia Gorge and a marvelous hike to Wahclella Falls. 'Twas gorgeous: Pics Here. For pics from ATC #1 2012, CLICK HERE. For pics from ATC 2011, WANDER HERE.

Luckily, the thunderstorm held off 'til this evening, when I heard several loud cracks 'n' peals from the comfort of my warm bubbly bath. :-)
