So, I've just realized that THIS is what I want to do on 1/1/09: walk a labyrinth. [livejournal.com profile] wildwoosi's made one in the snow around the firepit up here at CopperMoon, but I'm thinking I'd also like to walk one imbued w/even more energy or whatEVER from having had numerous folks walk it over time. In the past I've headed out (as per tradition traditionally organized by [livejournal.com profile] twistedcat) to the replica of the one at Chartres they have over at Glendale Forest Lawn, but that's over 1,000 miles away - just too danged far, even for me.

Any local (I'm now an hour NE of Seattle) ones anybody knows 'bout to suggest? Thx!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL & SUNDRY!

This bout of Bell's Palsy that began on Winter Solstice has nearly passed. The left side of my face's getting expressive again. A week and a half of feeling like I'm coming outta the dentist office has worn thin, even if the fun steroids make me not care very much. Kudos once again to [livejournal.com profile] lightfoote who braved serious weather to drive me to the drug store for my prescriptions right after the symptoms began. Methinks it's a big reason why they're fading so quickly now.

If you feel like braving the ferry, Earth Sanctuary on Whidbey Island has a lovely labyrinth. The place in general is beautiful - I wish I got around to visiting it more often.

Dunno if you have NYE plans yet, but we are having a few friends over for a laid-back evening. You and yours would be more than welcome to stop by, and I'd love to see you.

Thx for the link. Do let's go explore it some together sometime.

Re: this eve - thx for the heads up. I saw when A posted 'bout it and it's certainly on my Duck List (um, as in options/ducks in a row/possibilities), I just don't know yet how I'll feel. We may not make it further than into town to play pool. But it would indeed be nice to see you...so we shall see.

*hugs*

Per this: http://labyrinthlocator.com/locate-a-labyrinth

This one is closest in Everett: http://www.everettwa.org/default.aspx?ID=566
This one is in Edmonds: http://www.sthildastpatrick.org/
There's a funky one here (in Edmonds): http://edmondscc.org/
And there's this one in my neighborhood: http://www.unityofbellevue.org/

The last one is likely snowed under. Not sure about the others.

Thank you so much. Useful to know 'bout and ultimately, to visit. :-)

We're now considering a jaunt out to Earth Sanctuary (http://www.earthsanctuary.org/) out on Whidbey Island on Friday...

Enjoy.

I keep forgetting that other folks have more free time and more willingness to drive long distances.

There's always the train (um, not necessarily to Whidbey Island) for traveling long distances. Do you tend to prefer to stay closer to home?

When I have limited time, yes. I'm not adverse to driving distance for a purpose, but rarely do day-trips.

When you said you wanted to walk one for New Year's, I assumed that there were other things to be done that day and other responsibilities on Friday. My suggestions were based on where one could easily get to. The idea of a trip to Whidbey never even crossed my mind.

And frankly, to be a size king for a second, the labyrinth on Whidbey appears rather small for the drive. You had also remarked you were interested in the Chartres type, which this is not.

I figure the Earth Sanctuary thingie's more than just the labyrinth. I'd forgotten all about it 'til today but've been meaning to head out yonder for a while now, since I first heard 'bout it yonks ago. Looking like it'll happen on Sat instead of Fri as [livejournal.com profile] wildwoosi must work. So'll likely hit something local as well.

Size-king: hee, the mini-Chartres one at Forest Lawn disappointed me at first, but once you're walking it, it expands hugely. Much of the labyrinth experience takes place inside where there's lots of infinity happening - in my mind/world/soul/experience, anyway. YMMV.

Looking forward to rescheduling dinner w/you, by the way, but not likely this trip. Mebbe Th, 2/12/09? And perhaps beforehand down Hive-way as well. There's a kick-@ss pizza joint right by mi casa where they cure their own meats and stick 'em on top. MMMmmmmeat...

The rumor is that the local Lutheran/Methodist church has a labyrinth in the back behind the sanctuary, and there is a sign, but I have no idea what the reality is. I just drive by it all the time on Lewis heading out of town. They don't say anything about it on either church website (they share the building), but it might be worth a call...

I can recommend the one in Everett. It's about 30-40 feet across, and it's used frequently. By me, at least ;) I love to walk it in the dark, under a full moon, or in the dark dark under a new moon. Sometimes, I have walkers with me, sometimes not. Sometimes, I take the old dog, and we go...but she's not so big on it ;) The park is generally very quiet save in the very middle of summer, so you usually won't be bothered by lookieloos and it's open as long as the park's open. That said, I've been there after the park's closed, and so far the cops haven't given me crap.

Heh - too true! Do you think there's a minotaur in the middle of the rose garden in the middle of Ladd's Addition? We should adventure to find and slay it sometime...or riddle it all Sphynx-like...

You know, I'm enough of a geek that I'm going to sit down and see if it is possible to trace a labyrinth through Ladds. I love that part of town anyway and this way, I'd be certain to see all the houses.

If you check out the Labyrinth Locator, there are 10 churches in Seattle who have labyrinths and Saint Mark's Cathedral also has an annual New Years Eve Labyrinth walk I've been tempted to attend.

there are 57 labyrinths within 100 miles of Seattle, but not knowing the zip, i can't narrow it down any more than that

also, from experience, call wherever you're going to make sure it's actually open to the public.
