It's definitely a drug I enjoy only when forced to enjoy it. :)
Interesting though - a friend of mine in her late 30s was diagnosed clinical depressive in her teens. She has more than a couple of times mentioned this experience (sleep deprivavtion) as enjoyable. I wonder if she's aware of this study?
The idea is that you've got to get enough sleep dep to throw yourself in to a manic or near manic state. Helps rewire the brain. Just like lots of sleep can make you more depressed or can also help bring you out of a manic state. You can also get these effects while still getting some sleep a night if you do several nights of moderate sleep dep.
