Back from the Hoh Rain Forest

What a wonderful (nearly a) week away! There's a long post (or several) abrewing, but I'm running on very little sleep now and drove a lot today (and it's freaking HOT here this evening 'twas 91 when I got home although thankfully it's fallen to 77 already - what a shift from this morning's low 40s and fog along the coast!), so I'm gonna be brief now. Suffice it to say that I had a FAB time helping delerium3 celebrate her 40th b-day properly out in Olympic Nat'l Park. We camped, hiked, beached (Ruby Beach and at our campsite on the Hoh river), kayaked the Hoh River, went horseback riding, entered the Twilight Zone (aka Forks, WA ;-), communed w/Nature, visited several Big Trees, got to enjoy the company of jormundgan Fri eve - this morn, ate, drank, and were merry...

did it seem that a seperate non parasitic seed had taken root in a nurse log? Or did it seem that the roots had sprouted new growth after being logged?
Wonder how close sitka spruce and sequoia are in growth style?

It's so freaking lush 'n' fecund that a fallen log provides a perfect host for new young growth. The roots grow right into and around the nurse log so you can see the structure even when the n-log's crumbled away. Love that temperate rain forest! (http://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/temperate-rain-forest.htm) Hope you get there when J-Pants & A'll appreciate it, too.
