For being such a progressive 'n' health-conscious city & state, Portland, OR's permissiveness re: smoking in bars 'n' clubs surprises me. Now I must get back into the habit of segregating my club clothes immediately upon arrival home so as not to get the nasty smell everywhere. So much for wearing what I wore yesterday eve again today. *blech*

On a more positive note, [livejournal.com profile] anansi133's heading over to mi casa as I type. It'll be fun showing him 'round the new digs as well. Heck, one of my half-dozen or so visits to PDX in the past year was because of and accompanied by him, so I owe him thx, along w/the (other) denizens & cohorts of Clan Sidhefire who've made me feel so welcome & at home in the PacNW.

We're health-conscious, but we're also anarchists. The smoking in bars represents the triumph of "YOU CAN"T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!@!!"

yeah, I was going to say they're reknowned for the individualism. Not quite as bad as Texas, but still, very "Don't step on me" ;P

I remember talking to a tow-truck driver in...whichever mid-Westernish state that was...'bout their refusal to require motorcyclists to wear helmets for similar reasons. (We didn't get into any discussion 'bout the societal costs of hospitalization for split-open-heads of bikers sans health insurance.)

Hehehe. I knew a particularly vocal opponent (a true conservative) to the helmet law in California. Right up until one (very likely) saved his life. He is still for less government (a staple of traditional conservatism) but he had to agree that without the helmet he would have been in very dire straights. And in his case the only reason he was wearing the helmet was the law. Not so anymore.
