I think it falls [like most things] into the category of "take what is useful, chuck the rest". There is a way to "corrupt" anything, no matter how beneficial - see most religions. Ultimately, if you're repatterning your brain to think happy thoughts, and release the associated happy brain chemicals, things are going to feel rosier no matter what the numbers say. If you see yourself as living with an abundance, you're going to [likely] be happier than if you see yourself as living with a lack. Whether or not those material benefits materialize is, at that point, fairly trivial to your happiness.
