So, there's a nice ginger cat who's been lurking in my backyard since I got back home yesterday. This morning, when I went out to water the plants, he sauntered in the open back door, as if'n he lived here. NO! (Not yet... ;-) No tag, no collar other than one of those string friendship thingies. Seems well fed, but wants attention. *sigh*

My advice is give him scritchers, but draw the line at letting him in. If he's well-fed and has a collar-like object around his neck, odds are overwhelming that he has people. Keep an eye on him to make sure his condition isn't deteriorating, though.

When I was a kid and we had indoor/outdoor cats, they used to go panhandle at the neighbors' houses all the time. Another time, another place. The neighbors all knew us and knew the cats, so they were never particularly successful at it.

I had no intention of letting him in, but I was down the back stairs, watering the fuschias, as I watched him scamper upstairs, and bop right through the mosquito net into the house. I went after him and put him out the front door, much to his consternation. About 15 minutes later, when I came back in from the back deck, he was inside again (I could've sworn he didn't go in again!). Yeah, I'll give him attention outside but'll have to keep a better eye on the door from now on.

Yeah, be careful. That's how we ended up with Herbie when I was a kid. :)

Yup. That's traditionally how I get cats. They just saunter in and ask " where's my food?" 20 years later they're still asking, but more slowly.

They do say people didn't so much domesticate cats as the other way around...
