Just this morning, after dropping my car off at the local auto shop for a check-up, I walked down a few blocks to my recently acquired fave coffee place (Acme) for a cuppa caffeine. As I sat there, listening to the jazz, chatting on and off w/the owner, leafing through local mags and writing in my journal, I realized how very much I enjoy having regular places to go/be/frequent.
I took a circuitous route back home, wandering through my neighborhood, enjoying the colorful houses, big trees, veggie & flower gardens, porch-cats, folks walking doggerals, kids riding bikes, &c. I'm expanding my known neighborhood w/all these walkies.
This evening I took the bus down to the Clinton Corner Cafe for the usual Tuesday Happy Hour (6:30-8:30pm) music by The Pagan Jug Band, and had a FAB time. I've been looking for a replacement for the former Tuesday night Irish jam-sessions at Finn McCool's in Santa Monica and this is it. I ended up sharing a table and chatting w/a semi-regular (hence my pref'd term: Irregular, which is what I'll be as I'm gone too much to make it every Tuesday, although at least once a month seems highly likely) who introduced me to various people, shared stories, and made me feel very welcome.
I love that it's a mixed-age crowd. The youngest audience member, Finn, was just two (2) weeks old. He's the son of Molly and the banjo player, Chris (one of the band's orig members). Another couple who left part-way through the first set had brought along w/their three (3) kids under 10. One regular couple're in their 60s/70s. When the music shifted from bluegrass to zydeco in the second set, they got out and boy-howdy they could dance! Loads of folks in-between in age populated the place, which was apparently not nearly as crowded as 'tis sometimes, per the woman w/whom I chatted the most. At the end, it all merged into a great Grateful Dead-reminiscent jam session. I didn't dance, although a half-dozen or so folks did at any one time...'nother time. Toes were tapping, hands clapping, heads bobbing, smiles spreading. Much fun & good times.
Overall 'twas comfie and fun and mellow and nice and welcoming and friendly - and the food was good, too. I'll be back. Yup. I'm now one of the Irregular Pagans. :-)
