In Amazon's defense, I believe that this was a genuine glitch rather than any anti-homosexual agenda. This is something I commented earlier in inkandalchemy's LJ:
From the look of it, the problem was one of data error that affected sweeping portions of the system. It looks like one Amazon employee in France while editing data was charged with flagging things as "Adult". Obviously such a thing would be labor intensive to do manually, so my guess would be that he put in a couple of specific search parameters to flag anything containing "gay" or "lesbian" as "adult" under the assumption that they would be erotica. Obviously, this had unintended consequences.
I think it would be out of character for the folks I know personally at Amazon to condone something like this, and they represent a pretty good cross section. I'm going to believe the glitch theory and will again grace them with my debit card...hopefully no further glitches will happen.
I can just see the India team doing something like this inadvertently...
I am not sure I get this. Just now, as I did a few days ago, I typed in simply "homosexuality" on amazon and all the books that came up were evangelical talking about how to prevent and cure homosexuality. From what I have read, the issue people were having was a link between homosexuality and pornography on amazon. And apparently that is fixed(?). But I find what is still there, that a default search treats homosexuality as a disease, all the more inappropriate. Isn't that the real issue?
I am also wondering about a glitch ... as I tried to send my daughter a book that was in stock but they wouldnt send it to across the border..??? I am going to try again and see LOL for the most part I actually like Amazon as an online retailer.
have you tried ordering it from the amazon site based where your daughter lives? (i.e. amazon.com vs amazon.ca va amazon.co.uk) That said, I have friends here in the states who reliably order from the UK site when they want UK editions of things like Harry Potter.
