I used to have a horrid habit of losing umbrellas. Every few months another one'd be gone. I clearly remember thinking "of course" when glancing in the just-then-slowly pulling out train at Victoria Station in London, only to see my lonely umbrella sitting on the seat. Another one gone. I sighed, unsurprised.

I'd thought that my umbrella luck had turned recently though. There's a nice colorful collapsible one my aunt 'n' uncle'd brought back from Hong Kong years ago that I kept (and used) for ages. Sure, I haven't seen it in a few months now, but I haven't given up hope yet. It's still classified as "misplaced."

But now I wonder whassup w/me and hats. Last w'end, I managed to put down and LOSE my keep-my-head-warm had it for YEARS grey & white & black hat in Ross. I went back and searched for it, fruitlessly, as did the oh-so-kind [livejournal.com profile] lightfoote. It's just a hat. WhatEVER.

We trotted off to REI and I got a new one. And I liked it. And I'd begun bonding w/it - it keeps my head warmer than the last one, actually, and goes w/my fave scarves. Then I went out to see Burn After Reading night before last...and that's the last I saw of it, despite keeping it on my knees, thinking specifically of taking care so it didn't get lost. Just got off the phone w/the guy at the theater who'll look around the call me if'n he spots it. I'm not holding my breath though.

I'm right now wearing the Best Hat Ever, the multi-coloured made-with-love one by [livejournal.com profile] ebony_sphynx a couple years back (which matching scarf I managed to Umbrella-Away sometime last year). It's raining. It's also sunny. Kittenheads're purring close-by. I've got things 'n' stuff on the ToDo list to cross off, including both a PDX drop-off and later on a pick-up.

Life smiles. I smile back. My head's warm. Long may the hats last!

In these parts, umbrellas are how we identify the tourists.

Ah, but we're all tourists in/at Life...

And life is what happens while we're making other plans, yeah, yeah.

Speaking of which, I'm vicariously excited 'bout your upcoming travel plans. Where're you going (LA, Vegas, FL, elsewhere)? What're your goals (other than escaping from Seattle/familiar environs/cold/wet/camp)? Oh, if'n you'd ever care for a co-journeyer, do keep me in mind...I like to travel 'n' explore, too.

I'm borderline wimping out. Realizing I really need to cut down on the out-go part of the equation. And, there are other things I could put the money toward. So, I'll let you know, but don't hold your breath.

yep, what [livejournal.com profile] princekermit said - umbrellas aren't really particularly useful in the PNW - in part because rain is usually accompanied by wind... often "turn your umbrella inside out" or "blowing sideways so the umbrella's useless" wind...
so ... I'd not be surprised that your hats are your new umbrellas. I do hope you find your fave. My trick is to find hats that I can shove into a pocket; my newest one (from the fam party, an *awesome* knit alpaca wool, with bunnies and sunshine and flowers on it, heehee!) - folds up really small so I can get it into a pocket that's already got stuff in it, and it stays in there...

*hug*

Yes, I LURV your newest hat - very nice and SMALL and warm. If'n they don't fold up, my second fave thing is 'em having strings to tie 'em onto my purse.

For me, it's my coffee cup I always leave behind however, until the 'last' time, it always found it's way home. Now I have it's clone and hoped the pattern would end with a new cup, but sadly I left it somewhere just the other day and had to live without it for awhile before it finally returned. No matter how hard I try and how mindful I am, I still manage to misplace it, often. So silly.

Yes, umbrellas are pretty useless in Seattle, especially when the wind whips up the streets. I once had a strong gust snap off the top of my umbrella and and I watched the top go rolling down the hill as I stood there with just a stick in my hand, it was pretty funny actually.

I totally use umbrellas all the time and i've lived in the PNW my whole life. I don't like rain coats, I usually wear dry clean only wool coats so it's nice to stay dry. I also like umbrellas for aesthetic purposes.
