Songs of the Loon
Oct. 28th, 2008 06:02 pmIt's simple really: I love Fall. I love the Pacific NW, Portland in particular. I love Fall up here. It's in the 50s-60s (63 right now), crisp & clear w/Fall colors shifting and changing and getting better and brighter every day. The sun's out after the morning mist. All's lovely and happy-making.
I first heard of Sauvie Island (not far outside Portland) summer before last, from some women having b-fast at the next table over from mine. Kudos to
ferociousbcycad (and housemates) for the l'il push it took to get there.
delerium3 & I joined 'em for their annual (and likely our first annual) Pumpkin Patch outing today. The misty fog was out in the morning when we arrived, burning off as the morning progressed. We walked out to the farthest 'n' best (least picked over) pumpkin field and had it all to ourselves. Hayrides don't kick in 'til Noon on weekdays. This meant we got to lug all our pumpkins back on our own, but 'twas worth it! It'd been YEARS since I'd picked my own pumpkin off the vine. It's a wonderfuly satisfying experience.
ferociousbcycad & crew left post-pumpkin harvesting.
delerium3 and I stuck around to enjoy the entire place. The smell of the ground floor of the barn took us both back to our grandmother's barn in CT where we used to spend summers as young 'uns. We wandered 'round the Maize Maze (something else I've been wanting to do for YEARS now), solving Cownundrums (and slapping knees heartily) along the way, walking deliriously and dazedly and happily in circles (but not as much as you might've thought), but ultimately finding out way through. And then there was the Cow Train: most definitely the best $2 I've ever spent! The (oh-so-cute) driver took the tractor-led train far too fast through the fields and we giggled and laughed lots. Then we drove around the rest of Sauvie Island - just lovely, which we'll more thoroughly explore on other occasions.
All in all, a damn fine Tuesday serving as fine prep for Wacky Wednesday o'morrow which'll feature a wake for Mother's Cookies and'll include pumpkin carving (our half-dozen (6) pumpkins cost us a wopping $7 TOTAL), butternut squash enchiladas, mulled wine, and likely more giggling/laughter.

And now, to figure out how to make butternut squash enchiladas...
