This is why I didn't think we should have gone into Iraq in the first place. But I also have a we broke it we bought it attitude. If we do leave half way through the process things will be worse. I believe a major part of our problems are the not finishing the job. For example the Taliban and Afghanistan would not have happened had we finished the job by rebuilding after the russians left. This is what we did after WW2 for Japan and West Germany. It worked quite well then. Problem is we as a country have not finished the job since Korea. We get involved. Then we decide we have had enough and leave. Leaving a huge mess behind us.
I was listening to a talk show on NPR today about depression era work programs like the WPA and the CCC. They also discussed the similarities between our current state and the depression.
I guess Obama wants to allocate 60 billion (could that be right? I better double check my facts) for internal work and infrastructure programs.
In short, Senate Republicans have agreed to 'talk' about Iraq. They haven't (at least as far as I could see) agreed to do anything else. It's a start and that's important.
The politico in me is watching for the election year ploy.
Yup. The start's important, as is the entire process. Ploy it may be, but sooner or later something's gotta give. Straws that break camel's backs and all...
they've agreed to talk because they think they can "win" the discussion. I still find that disheartening, perhaps even more disheartening than them thinking talk is too dangerous for their position. Here's hoping it winds up being productive!
