My new printer's been working just fine. I've only ever printed in B&W and made only B&W copies. This morning it decided to stop working (e.g., refusing to print anything or copy anything, even B&W), because all of a sudden it's decided to take umbrage at the color cartridge, claiming it's not right for the printer. WTF? I've got spare B&W cartridges, but not a spare color one (since I use it so infrequently it didn't make sense to always have an extra on hand since I figured I'd pick one up were I ever to use it extensively). Anyway, I got a brand spanking new color ink cartridge, stuck it in, and voila, now I can print and copy in B&W. Well, presumably in color, too, but I don't need to so haven't bothered testing it beyond the alignment page it does when a new cartridge gets installed. Stupid device.

By chance, did you "upgrade" the printer driver? These days, a lot of vendor "upgrades" are actually downgrades- you get *less* functionality out of your gear after the update.

The kind of shit that the printer companies pull is just amazing to me.

This is why I no longer by inkjet printers. They in a word suck. When new ink cartridges cost more than the printer (shaving razor scheme.)I see no point to them. I spent the extra 200 bucks bought a color laser printer and am loving it. I can print out the wazzoo on the toner I have. Added bonus the toner doesn't dry out and ruin the printer.... I could go on and on. Likely the ink drying out bit was the printers complaint.
