Quickie Update
May. 21st, 2007 08:50 amNow how many of you faithful readers or sometime skimmers actually believed the "quickie" bit? ;-) There's a lot going on in here these daze. HERE = inside the MLE.
This w'end went well, despite lost luggage (found and recovered in time, thank goodness, as 'twas the bag w/all the important meds in't) and much getting lost ourselves. Luckily MD's a small state and Annapolis's a small town - and I quite enjoy getting lost when time's not an issue, which was indeed the case as we left plenty of time for precisely such occurrences. No time for an extended narration, 'cause I've gotta pack the car w/everything I left behind when I drove up w/the cats 2 months and 2 days ago (cannot tell whether this feels like a long or short time ago...'twas another lifetime ago, regardless), then tetris in however many IKEA bookcases I can, then blaze up Hwy 5 for hundreds of miles. Luckily I've got great music to listen to...and loads to process along the way.
We stayed on the waterfront in Annapolis, looking out at the boats on the bay, trying to imagine what it must've looked and felt like way back when boat battles were being fought right there (Revo War aka War o' Independence and War o' 1812). The town's damnably historic and picturesque. We wandered olde streets filled w/olde houses (hundreds of years olde and very neato for a West Coaster) and a mess o' different architectural styles. I took some pics (will post some sometime) of the Capital Building. It's the capital o' MD and was the first peacetime capital of the U.S. o' A. The Treaty o' Paris was signed there, ending the American Revolution. Big deal stuff went down.
As it's Commission Week, when the naval cadets become officers (aka graduate from the naval academy), the streets were filled w/guys 'n' gals in dress whites. Wondering how many'll end up w/red stains on 'em before long, but figure they're less likely to than the grunts in desert khaki fatigues. My uncle (father o' the bride this w'end) reminisced some 'bout his days as a Marine, including getting the telegram 'bout packing and getting ready to leave in 48 hours then not having to leave after all (Bay of Pigs).
So, the last two (2) weddings I've been to (last Sept in CT and this past w'end in MD) were of 1st cousins who met their their spouse on-line (Match.com). The location - Chesapeake Bay Foundation - was gorgeous, overlooking the water. 'Twas also a fully green site w/composting toilets, cisterns for catching and caching rainwater, gravel instead of asphalt for drainage into the aquifer rather than run-off, etc. The ceremony included the step-daughters quite nicely. Always interesting seeing how slightly older and non-standard fambily go about celebrating their union. It began by the good friend o' my cuz remarking that when asked to officiate he felt honored but had to remind the couple that he wasn't a minister or priest or anything like that, but then they reminded him that they're already married (this was a celebration after their elopement). We all chuckled. It ended with a statement to the effect of "now, with absolutely no official authority whatsoever, I pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the husband." Just charming.
There was a good selection of people at this party (and great food, too): loads o' D.C. attorneys and folks who work 'round politics. Got some interesting insights and takes on things from the crowd. Felt really good that I no longer feel outta place or outta sort during/after such events. Sure, the whole lawyering thing didn't work out for me as it could've, and I don't have a strong stable o' friends 'n' buddies from a bunch of times in my life, but I'm pleased w/where things are and where they're going and I've got good friends who're getting better (closer, stronger, deeper) as time goes by.
Alright, must get on w/it. Travel's fun, but deeply exhausting. I've logged nearly 5000 miles (mostly flying) since Friday and have another 1000 (driving solo) to do in the next couple of daze. I feel the call of my kittenheads...and soon I'll get to sleep in my brand new bed (a first ever for me).
