On Literacy

Literacy is more than just being able to read. It includes comprehension and acting accordingly. So, when the driver takes the large white van up the alley past the large hard-to-miss sign reading "ROAD CLOSED - CONSTRUCTION" then has to back up a ways b'c *gasp* the road's closed, it's HIS OWN DAMN FAULT and he has no right to swear at the construction workers for his failure to heed the sign. ("The sign was up yesterday but I still got through" is not a valid excuse for being upset at his inability to get through today.)

I grew up hearing my mom say "Literacy - it opens whole new worlds!" - usually in a fairly snarky manner after we'd failed to read the bold print right in front of our faces. ::chuckle::
