Today's been mega-moody. Okay, I'VE been mega-moody today, for no apparent reason, so we can call it BRP or something or not CALL it anything and just acknowledge it and move on. 'Cause right now I'm mellow and pleasant and happy not to be driving any more. I'm now happily ensconced at the Mark Spencer Hotel in Portland, OR, one of my new(ish) home-away-from-homes. This is my...pulls out PaperPalm(tm) from '06 to find out for sure...4th time staying here (5th time in PDX) since last May...and I'm quite content and pleased. I opted for the cheapo (double-digit) room rather than the suite, but ended up in a place not much smaller than my apartment. I just made dinner in the kitchen and opened a bottle of wine and am enjoying life the universe and everything after a long drive broken up by darts & lunch w/a friend (son of a friend and now a friend in his own right...fascinating how things work out) at The Black Sheep pub in Ashland, OR.

The drive up was gorgeous. The evergreens're the same, but last time up the deciduous trees wore riotously blazing Joseph coats but now seem quite subdued...but not completely devoid of colour, ranging from greyish brown to red 'n' orange-tipped to pale green dripping w/Spanish moss (unless it's lace lichen like in Carmel) as if the hazy shade of winter's sucked out most of the colour...AND NOW I'M SO LOOKING FWD TO SEEING 'EM AT IN SPRING AND IN SUMMER!

Managed to miss the Wolf's Inn (former stage coach stop now state park B&B and restaurant) AGAIN, making my record 0 for 2. Last time 'twas closed for two (2) weeks refurbishment (messing w/both coming and going travels). This time it's Low Season, thus only open Wed - Sun, so I'm once again outta luck. I WILL prevail, though, come Spring (or sometime, anyway).

The marvelously red soil that starts appearing North of Redding ('round Shasta Lake/Mtn) has faded to a delightful orange. 'Twas a gorgeous drive...yet something kicked in and made me...morose. I think what it was was that I wanted to share it w/somebody...and these daze there isn't somebody in particular to share things like this with. I know some of you may be interested in sharing my adventures vicariously...but I'd really REALLY truly like someone along in person, too, as well as in spirit. Someone to be there when the sky shifts colours, when the views explode w/wonderment...yeah yeah...whatEVER, I know I can't have everything. I'm still incredibly pleased to have these experiences solo, regardless of who else knows 'bout 'em...but I do wish for someone special...or more than one special person...to come 'long on more of my trips/adventures...

*sigh*

Now to return to my hot soup w/crushed garlic and olive bread w/Irish butter...and begin reading. O'morrow I'll head out. I'm walking distance from Powell's, Whole Foods, Spartacus, a great wine shop, as well as all of downtown PDX (it's just not that big a place), including the art museum, library, &c.

I think I know what you mean. I just watched this documentary on tv about John Adams and they were talking about his relationship with his wife, Abigail. The documentarian said that people who are merely lovers look into one another's eyes and that those who love one another look out at the world together. John and Abigail had both all of their lives which is a rare and wonderful thing.
