Yes, I'm amused rather than PO'd at myself for not thinking things through too clearly. Oopsies include: July 4th is a major holiday w'end. Sta Barbie is a prime destination for major holiday w'ends during the summer. July 4 for many folks is the final day of a 4-day major summer holiday w'end. The fireworks in Sta Barbie on July 4 will go off at 9pm at West Beach, located mere blocks away from the Amtrak station in Sta Barbie, so trying to pick a friend up from said train station at 6pm(ish) could be a tad trouble-some traffic-wise and parking-wise, 'specially if'n the train runs anywhere near as late at is has recently Northbound. I've heard it doesn't run AS late. So, since it took an extra 7.5 hours heading North, if'n it's only half that late heading Southwards, it'll arrive smack dab in the middle of the fireworks. Whoo-hoo!

Reminds me of my track record of barely missing spectaculor fireworks displays. Way back when (May 1983) when a friend and I fled cross-country on Greyhound (to escape the stalking ex), we arrived in NYC just in time to hear about the impending Huge Celebration for the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. We RAN pell-mell down towards it, hearing the booms & cheers all the way, only to scoot around the corner in view finally JUST after everything reached fever pitch...and it ended. We missed it ALL. Replayed this scenario again for the following year's 4th o' July when we were stuck in traffic (amidst tallish buildings so couldn't see dick) trying to park for Sta Monica's fireworks out by the pier/ocean.

I've seen many good displays before and since. All my forays to D-land this past year+ have given me extra chances for fab fireworks, so I'm feeling good.

Anyway, today's gonna be busy busy busy...

well, what about this....?

Depending on circumstances, I *could* hang out in St Barbie until the fireworks have begun, or at least until everybody has (hopefully) parked?

If you're headed my way at the time when everyone else is headed away from S.B., then you'll just be waving to all the nice people going in the opposite direction.

Late train could make this all a moot point, I'll call ahead as we discussed with more current reality-reportage.

I've got a couple more hours here to reconsider my packing choices, and then I'm on my way!

Wait, I LOVE FIREWORKS and wanna see 'em. And if I'm trying to approach the parking lot to getcha just as everybody's leaving the parking lot, it's still gonna be a madhouse. Depending on how much luggage you have I may ask you to walk a couple blocks away from the station to make it easier to getcha. Again, though, this is all dependent on timing which we'll know more about as the trip progresses. Hope you have a GREAT time travellin'!
