Maintaining Control By Ensuring Failure

This came up in a conversation recently. One way to maintain a sense of control in a situation is to do something to sabotage the situation, thereby "controlling" it by ensuring it fails. While it makes some logical sense, it really rankles, and strikes me as sad, and not overly healthy (certainly insofar as it pertains to r-ships).
