Just dawned on me that I can't transport a live (warm) cake to camping to assemble and frost there, so I've gotta bake it TODAY, let it cool o-nite, then assemble and frost it o'morrow. Luckily I've got a most wonderous Tupperware cake transporter so it'll make it out there in one piece, unblemished and ready to eat. Hmm, the checkerboard cake calls for 3 - 9" layers but most of my cake batter recipes make 2 - 8" cakes...guess I'll make one entire recipe of each and use any excess for cupcakes. Thinking of sour-cream choco and orange, as it's an October b-day and this'll look nicely seasonal.

I'm gonna go shower now. If'n any math-types feel particularly sweet, wouldja let me know the diff in area/volume (same H for each) 'tween 2 - 8" diameter cake layers and 1.5 - 9" diameter cake layers. If'n logistics permit, I'll reward you w/cupcakes.

Area = piR^2
Vol = Area*H

2(8"):
Area = (3.14*4^2)*2) = 100.48 sq in

1.5(9"):
Area = (3.14*4.5^2)*1.5 = 95.3775 sq in

Many thx! Thinking I'll be able to squeeze out a choco and an orange cupcake for you out of the difference.

SO SORRY!

Ack - I'm SO sorry, but I managed to remember cupcakes about 10 minutes too late. They're a tad overcooked and dry and fully unfrosted though, so perhaps it's for the best. 'Twas not a baking disaster, but still a baking disappointment. Physics came into play and mucked up the best laid plans of mice and me. The recipe w/the bakeware is basically one single type of cake batter than you add choco to half at the end. I used 2 diff recipes from 2 diff cookbooks. Turns out one was quite liquid (choco) while the other was light & fluffy (not surprisingly, as it called for folding in 4 whipped to soft peak egg whites at the end), so even though I used the divider and made concentric circles when pouring batter into the tins, specific gravity and something else fancy happened so the choco sunk and the orange floated and all I got was a bad layering job (sorta like that junior high haircut). AND the cake fell to bits coming outta the pan (bottom stuck to tin). Sigh. Guess there'll be a Do Over tonight, post D-land. NOT in the schedule, but not nearly as annoying as printer problems, luckily. On a side note, there's prolly a limit to reply to comment length, so I best shut up now. And get ready for D-land. Ack! Have a great w'end!

Had a magnificent day - thx! Baking (pt 2) and/or cake shaving & frosting interestingly to hide damage must wait 'til o'morrow morn, as I'm bushed. Still gotta pack for the w'end away...and hoping to leave my Noon. Ha ha ha! I amuse myself.
