I've always claimed that I was shy growing up, and folks've generally laughed at the thought, b'c nowadays I'm pretty darned extroverted 'n' social. Really 'twas so, though. I spent lots of time on my own when I was younger, sans others my age. Rather than making friends, I spent much of my time in my head - reading 'n' roaming, wandering 'n' wondering. Even now, despite my acknowledged need to spend time with and around others, I also need a fair amount of ME time, too.
